Masters and Puppets

The next time you have an opportunity to experience a conversation around a group of people, whether it be your family, friends, co-workers or just about any group, make it your covert mission to take notice of each individual as the topic of conversation is bandied about.

This experiment is most effective when an issue is being debated or when collaboration is required, however, you can do this during any group setting.

Take note of individual facial expressions, body language, and reactions as a topic is discussed.

Almost always, there is one-person who will take charge of the conversation and ‘lead’ the direction of ‘thought’ while everyone else is stationed in an idle and attentive position.

Some people in the group will be absorbing, analyzing and breaking down the given information, while others will accept the information being presented as fact and most likely be in awe.

Still, others will be disconnected and uninterested as to the outcome of the discussion.

Then, sometimes, there will be one person in the group, who will attempt to challenge the direction of thought, and when this happens, you will be a witness to a fascinating dynamic.

Depending on the severity of the topic being discussed and how important it is for one or the other to be right, vigorous debate will inevitably ensue.

When this vigorous debate takes place, you are as close as you can possibly be to witnessing the mind in action as both parties jockey for position.

Not only are these two cerebral combatants fighting for the claim to be the Master of their position, but also at stake are the hearts and minds of those observing and listening to their points.

All individual members of the group will be inclined to decide as to their own individual positions as the the debate rails on and as the debate comes to a conclusion.

For certain, many debates are as innocuous as determining who the-best-all-time-quarterback might be, yet, at other times, the debate may be of much higher consequence, such as, who you will vote for in the next presidential election.

There are all sorts of conversations and debates going on at any given time all across the country.

Some of these conversations and debates are in your home, some are in lounges and bars, but most conversations and debates take place on radio and on television.

It is imperative for YOU, as an individual, to have a solid foundation of principles and values and be able to form your own opinions based on facts and common sense on a variety of issues.

Through clarity of your own experiences, what you believe in and of who you are, there will be little chance for you to be swayed by a self-proclaimed Master who’s only desires to capture your attention and make you their puppet.

As a sage man once said, ‘If you do not stand for something, you are susceptible to fall for anything.’
